date of origin: 19th of may, 2013.
this is my post. do you know how it feels to have this be your post? do you understand the guilt i have to live with knowing this is my post? the weight on my soul as the decade popped into prominence with spanish flu … 2 !
do you know how it feels, heritageposts? are any of these heritage posts your own or are you just a curator of human misery? do you know how it feels to live knowing that of anything i’ve ever made, anything i’ve ever said, this has been seen by most people, and this will probably remain the case until i die? for this to be my legacy? can you relate? can you empathize?
but do you want to know the worst part? the absolute worst part of all of this?
we haven’t even brought back art deco into mainstream prominence. sickening
Happy ten years to this post
in 7 years its going to be the 30s again so we can bring back (the great) depression and unemployment and poverty and … never mind.
Can you imagine if you were a smuggler on the black market, unloading your evil wares on Mandalore, and then the freaking Duchess of Mandalore herself shows up to arrest you personally??????
Also, right behind her is..... the former Queen of Naboo?????????
Big "you want something done right, do it yourself" energy
I think we all might be sleeping on the absolutely unhinged and bitter dynamic that would have resulted between Padme and Qui-Gon had Qui survived. Like picture Qui-Gon “We didn’t come to free slaves” Jinn and Padme “Slavery and exploitation can and will die in a hole if I have anything to say about it” Amidala having interaction during the Clone Wars. I feel like they would alternately get along like a house on fire and be at each other’s throats. Not to mention the whole Anakin dynamic! Qui be like oh hey I can free this child to save the galaxy and Padme is like I can free this child because it’s the Right Thing, and you CANNOT tell me they wouldn’t clash over Anakin constantly, especially after Padme and Anakin get married.
All I’m saying is that Padme and Qui are two characters that are absolutely certain at any given moment that they are Right and everyone else is just Wrong, and I really, really, really want to watch them snipe at each other. Sprinkle in some conflicted “this is the nice old guy who saved my life when I was fourteen” into Padme’s feelings toward him and some “weirdly enough I still feel responsible for this bratty queen/senator” into Qui AND YOU REALLY HAVE SOMETHING.
(This all brought to you by I Wrote a Fic, it’s the Accidental Sith AU pinned on my dash).
"you can't pick and choose what you like from canon" common misconception! yes you can
but please do not get this very true concept confused with “you cannot pick and choose what is canon”
they are two very different things.
It’s time for another Obitine analysis surrounding the Darth Maul: Shadow Conspiracy book! This thing has so many things to talk about!
Specifically, we’ll be comparing a scene included in the book with a deleted scene from the episode. There are some similarities, but also a lot of differences.
First, the deleted scene from the episode, which starts at 21:35:
Here’s the transcript:

Where to start with this mess? Anakin just really ticks me off. Sure, he thinks that Obi-Wan’s crush on Satine is amusing, but even though he recognizes that Obi-Wan is behaving … well, like him in this moment, in this scene, Anakin really fails to comprehend the depth of Obi-Wan’s anxiety over Satine’s situation on Mandalore. He doesn’t seem to recognize that Obi-Wan is effectively going temporarily AWOL – he’s planning to rescue Satine, bring her back, and damn any consequences that inevitably follow. That’s huge.
But Anakin’s so lighthearted through this entire scene – joking about Obi-Wan wanting “time alone with [his] girlfriend” (thus ignoring the actual violent battle going on), not taking Obi-Wan’s concerns seriously that the Twilight isn’t going to be able to complete the mission (even when it sparks and sputters as it takes off), and offering no other help or even comfort to him as he’s leaving.
Instead of trying to find/commandeer another ship, Anakin assures Obi-Wan (a man who doesn’t even like to fly) that it’ll be fine … even as the scene hits us over the head again and again by even bringing Ahsoka in to say, “Hey, did you fix that heap of crap yet?!” Anakin admits that he hasn’t fixed it, and brushes it off. He ends up impeding Obi-Wan’s journey to Mandalore, and if the Twilight had been in better condition it would have started up more quickly when Obi-Wan and Satine were making their escape.
In short, Satine’s death was likely partially brought about because of the shoddiness of Anakin’s stoopid ship, and this scene makes Anakin so light-heartedly callous about the situation that it makes me very angry.
But let’s look at the extra scene that we see in the novelization:

Oh, my stars! It fixes everything I have a problem with in the deleted scene. Anakin understands the gravity of the situation, he’s disgusted by the lack of action by the Council, he expresses concern over the status of the Twilight, and he immediately offers to go with Obi-Wan!
It’s so regrettable that Obi-Wan turned him down. I get that he didn’t want to get Anakin in trouble (and the plot of the episode demanded that Obi-Wan be utterly alone), but Anakin could have been working to shore up the freighter on the way to Mandalore, and he would have been the extra help they needed to get Satine away.
(But also, I love the line that Obi-Wan uses to describe what he knows will be the Council’s reaction even without Anakin coming along … “Let’s keep the level of uproar to merely enormous, shall we?” That line convinces me that if Obi-Wan saved Satine, he was prepared for the Council and everyone else to recognize the depths of his feelings for her. Personally, given his willingness to go AWOL without hesitation, I believe that he was preparing to leave the Order if he succeeded in saving her … let me drown in my tears.)
And they even get a “girlfriend” quip in there. But unlike the deleted scene, where Anakin’s comment comes off as so out-of-touch with the situation that Obi-Wan doesn’t even dignify it with a response, in the book, the comment actually has weight. He recognizes that Obi-Wan is actually going to “rescue” Satine (not that he wants “alone time” with her), and when Obi-Wan tries to deny it, Anakin meets his gaze and conveys that he does understand what she means to him.
And then Obi-Wan nods and smiles in acceptance of the fact that he can’t hide his true feelings from Anakin. So in the end, he doesn’t deny his feelings for her to him any more (which we also see with that rather problematic scene in “The Rise of Clovis”).
And finally, instead of the awkward quip about changing the name of the ship, Anakin leaves Obi-Wan with the Force Benediction. He may not be going with him to Mandalore, but he understands that Obi-Wan is going to need strength and guidance for this mission, and he sees him off with that blessing for his journey.
So. Much. Better.
Rebloging to remind you how good Jason Fry’s Darth Maul: Shadow Conspiracy is and why if there ever is a novel about Obi-Wan and Satine’s year on the run, he’s the one I want to do it.
